Our Asana Practice : Mysore Ashtanga Yoga

The Ashtanga Yoga system is a living lineage that dates back nearly five thousand years in an unbroken line of teachers, sages and gurus that culminates in the life of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, his grandson Sharath Rangaswamy and every Ashtanga practitioner today. Developed by TKV Krishnamacharya and his student Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois who tells us that it was derived from the ancient indian text, the Yoga Kurunta, written by Vamana Rishi.

The Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa system is sequences of postures that are connected by breath .The flow between each posture is an integral part of the practice.

Hetal continues her quest on the spiritual path , She has been initiated on the path of Kriya yoga by his Holiness Swami Vidyadhishananda who is a highly ordained vedic monk . He hails from lineages of meditation adepts from Himalaya who are known for their combination of rishi sagely scholarship and natha yogic practices.

Aum Yoga Sadhana has been a blessing for me. Having done Yoga several times in the past, it is only after my association with Yoga Sadhana that I experienced the sustainable and holistic transformation. I have been able to sustain my Yoga practice despite varying energy levels due to several modifications that is taught in the class. No matter if one is an experienced yoga practitioner or a beginner, Aum Yoga Sadhana is for everyone. Hetal Ji, as a Yoga Guru is an invaluable asset. While we may find several teachers who can teach us Asanas and Pranayam, it is extremely rare to find a teacher who is so well versed in ancient literature that us given us Yoga, creates space for students by guiding them on the path of Yamas and Niyamas, discipline in food so that Yoga practice is enhanced and it is transformative. Her dedication towards uplifting her students is extremely rare to find. Practicing under her has brought tremendous awareness in me. I feel my energy level has improved, the approach towards eating has transformed and I am introduced to the treasure of great ancient literature related to Yoga. And I experienced all of this while having fun along the way. I look forward to continuing my journey with Yog Sadhana just the way I eagerly wait for their Sunday class.

For a long time, I was going through anxiety and depression. Slowly the situation kept getting worse and worse. Not long after did I start having panic attacks. It got to a situation where I had to go to the hospital. The doctor told me to take allopathy, I took the medication, but I still couldn’t get a good night’s sleep. Finally, due to god’s grace, I got in contact with Hetal ji. From the first meeting she gave a lot of confidence that I could get out of what I was going through. She told me what I have to do from morning to evening including yoga, meditation, food and spiritual reading. She had told me to do this without any expectations and my new journey had begun. Every day I practiced my yog sadhana with full dedication and followed the routine explained by Hetal ji. I was surprised that within a few months I stooped taking the medication. I also realized that when I did yoga in the morning I got much more energy throughout the day. Later my wife and daughter also started doing yoga practice. Every Sunday Hetal ji holds yoga classes that boosts my confidence to get through with doing yoga.

‘Manaḥpraśamanopāyo yoga ityabhidhīyate’-‘The recourse to pacify the mind is called yoga’, as rightly quoted by Mahopanisad, yoga has been a boon and blessing to my life. I was diagnosed with Polycystic ovarian disorder a few years back due to which my menstruation cycles became irregular, evolved towards hypothyroidism and eventually I gained a truckload of weight. This just not disrupted my physique but also turned my mental framework to collapse. Years together of continued medication did not still contribute towards any progress. It was then, when I got to know about Astanga yoga practice as I had seen Hetal ji and Devraj ji perform it during one of our events. Though, it being so strenuous, it was so gracefully performed that I actually felt the need to do it. Now, my approach was not to correct my ailment but was to reach this level of grace in my practice. This was when I mentally signed up to a lifetime learning of Astanga yoga under the guidance of Hetal ji. I was so immersed in sensing the nuances of the movement of muscles, filling every part of my body with prana and observing deep down my mind during the practice that I started enjoying it. That 90 minutes of yoga practice was what I used to be eagerly waiting for every day. Every advancement in each asana that I performed be it the smallest correction gave me immense happiness and today after almost 10 months of practice, I have correct menstruation, lost 15 kgs of weight and more than anything gained mental peace. It was very less that I lost and gained more than I ever could imagine. Yoga has become such a part of my life that even if I miss it for a day I feel an imbalance. Quoting Patanjali, “When you are inspired by some great purpose, your mind transcends limitations, your conscious expands in every direction and you find yourself in a great, wonderful world”, yoga has become that great experience to me.
